Turf Bog Tours – Essential Information

To help you discover more about and to be prepared for a Turf Bog Tour experience we have compiled the following useful information:

Meeting Point – our regular meeting point for Turf Bog Tours is at the car park of the Jolly Farmer Bar & Restaurant in Belleek. However we can be flexible with this and meet in nearby Ballyshannon if required.

Footwear & Clothing – the turf bog landscape is an exposed place so we recommend good strong footwear (hiking boots/shoes or wellys), a waterproof and windproof jacket, wear plenty layers and long trousers.

What to expect – the walk in to our turf bank takes approximately 10 minutes and the first part is on a gravel track so strong footwear is a big help. We will stop plenty times to take in the views, nonetheless a moderate level of fitness is advised. As part of the experience we also take you on to Lough Finn a hidden lough only accessible on foot through a pine forest, again it’s rough underfoot so come prepared. We also include a visit to a WW2 plane crash site memorial and the walk in to this site takes 5 minutes on a bog track.

Best times to visit – we start preparing the turf bank in March and then commence cutting in early April with the aim of having all turf cut in May. The remainder of May and June are dedicated to getting the turf dried and then in early July we aim to get the turf home. Therefore, if you can schedule your visit from March – early July you will see the bog operation up close. Outwith that, the remainder of July through to early October are still suitable for visits.

Tailored Turf Bog Tours – we can extend your Turf Bog Tour experience to include other landmarks and sites close by. For example we can escort you on a hike up the Cliffs of Magho to the viewpoint or a trek up to the vantage point at Little Dog. We can also factor in a visit to local pubs complete with glass of Guinness and a turf fire!

What we provide – a fully guided unique and nostalgic experience that will live long in the memory. We even stop for a tea and coffee break with homemade bread and a turf fire . We provide you with binoculars so you can take in the views. Plus rest assured that we bring midgie repellent and a first aid kit.
